Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has entered a technical assistance and licence agreement with China Merchants Heavy Industries-Jiangsu (CMHI-Jiangsu), a subsidiary of China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMI).

The agreement will allow the shipbuilder to use GTT’s membrane containment systems in the vessels it constructs.

The deal is said to mark a new stage in the alliance between the two firms, in part due to the shipyard having secured a licence to build large-capacity liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs).

CMI and GTT signed their first technical service agreement for the maintenance and repair of LNGCs in 2013.

In 2016, the firms reached a cooperation agreement for the assessment of CMHI to deploy GTT technologies.

As the owner of seven shipbuilding and repair bases, CMI is a resource integration and management platform for China Merchants Group’s marine and offshore equipment manufacturing business.

Earlier this month, GTT won an order from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) for the tank design of ten new LNG vessels.

The tanks will use the GTT-developed NO96 L03+ and NO96 GW membrane containment system.
