Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Line has named its new very large gas carrier (VLGC) at Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan.
Named Lupinus Planet, the new VLGC will be chartered to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company Astomos Energy.

Claimed to be NYK‘s first LPG dual-fuel VLGC, Lupinus Planet has an overall length of 229.90m, breadth of 37.20m, depth of 21.90m, and summer draft of 11.60m.
It has a tank capacity of around 86,500m³, including the on-deck tank capacity of 2,500m³.
Compared to conventional VLGCs, which are fitted with fuel-oil engines, the vessel will produce around 85% less sulfur oxide (SOx) and 15% less carbon dioxide (CO₂) when LPG is used as fuel.
NYK stated that it will ‘further strengthen its long-standing close relationship with Astomos Energy and promote the development of an eco-friendly fleet to contribute to a low-carbon supply chain and realise a sustainable society’.

The ship will transport wood chips from New Zealand, Australia, North America and South America under a long-term contract between NYK and Marusumi Paper.
