Norwegian shipping company Fjord Line has contracted Australia-based Austal Ships to build a new high-speed catamaran ferry.

The new 109m-long, 30.5m-wide vessel will have the capacity to carry 1,200 passengers and more than 400 cars.

It will also feature a tax-free shop on-board for refreshments, and designated zones for children.

The ferry will sail maximum a speed of 40k and is scheduled to enter service by 2020.

Fjord Line plans to operate the new vessel between Kristiansand, Norway, and Hirtshals, Denmark.

ABB has provided an upgraded DEGO IV vessel-control software package to Stena Line's 120-trailer capacity Stena Scotia freight ferry.

The fourth-generation DEGO IV software features an advanced speed governing solution and actuation system, which offers superior control over the ferry’s propulsion system.

It also reduces the vessel's roll and rudder movements for fuel conservation and collects data from the ship's on-board sensors.

Additionally, the upgraded software package will help to monitor 60 shipboard parameters, including engine performance and propeller performance, vessel centre of gravity, torque and real-time navigational information.

Lloyd's Register (LR) has agreed to provide consultancy support to the Quadriga sustainable shipping project, which aims to build the world's largest sailing cargo ship.

The project was devised by German company Sailing Cargo.

LR will provide consultancy support during the design and specification stages, as well as on-site construction supervision for the development of the 170m car carrier.

The vessel will be able to accommodate between 1,700 and 2,000 cars.

LR has also agreed to help ensure the ship's compliance with various technical, safety and environmental standards after the completion of project.
