Norway’s Siem Offshore has signed a five-year contract with Steerprop to receive propulsion monitoring service Steerprop Care Premium for three of its platform supply vessels.
Steerprop Care is aimed at improving the availability of a ship by keeping track of the main propulsion system’s health, as well as informing about changes that could indicate future maintenance requirements.
The scope of the contract features three of Siem Offshore’s 5,500dwt platform supply vessels, namely Siem Pride, Siem Symphony and Siem Thiima.
These ships are installed with Steerprop’s propulsion units and sail in Norwegian and Australian waters.
Steerprop Care’s basic version is Standalone, which provides basic information about the propulsion system condition to the onboard crew.
Since 2019, this version has been present in every propulsion unit delivery.

By GlobalDataThe online versions, Steerprop Care Plus and Premium, deliver more advanced measurement services and are available as a retrofit installation.
Steerprop’s predictive maintenance team alerts the ship crew in the case of any development that might cause future disturbances on a vessel, as well as providing remote assistance.
Steerprop product data management manager Jarkko Sirrola said: “Machine learning guides our experts in predictive maintenance to focus on the right measurements at the right time, revealing consequential changes in the behaviour of the propulsion system.
“With these insights, our team can work more efficiently, and we are able to provide information on equipment condition so well in advance that our customer can plan the upcoming maintenance as efficiently as possible. The new level of predictive maintenance will ultimately lead to an enhanced availability of the vessel, increased safety and optimised maintenance based on the real requirements of the propulsion system.”
Last February, Wartsila won a five-year optimised maintenance agreement from Siem Offshore to reduce the carbon footprint of two of the company’s offshore well intervention vessels by deploying the latest digital technology.
