Costa Toscana is the third ship of the Costa Group fleet. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the new flagship ship will be operated by Costa Cruises, the Italian brand of Carnival Corporation.
The first metal sheet cutting took place in July 2019 and its hull assembly began in February 2020. The float-out ceremony of the Costa Toscana was held at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in January 2021.
The vessel is a sister ship of Costa Smeralda and will enter service in December 2021 upon completion of interior fittings. It will be representing a tribute to the Tuscany region, which is one of the most popular regions in Italy.
Costa Toscana cruise ship design and features
The design of the ship is inspired by Italian art, culture and landscapes. The ship will house premium sports facilities, entertainment, and spa treatments.
With a gross registered tonnage of more than 185,010t, the Costa Toscana next-generation ship will accommodate approximately 6,554 guests. The ship will be one of the world’s biggest ocean liners, measuring 337m long and 42m wide. Costa Toscana can carry 1,646 crew members and will be able to sail at a service speed of 17k.
Staterooms
Costa Toscana will include more than 2,600 Italian style comfortable and stylish staterooms, designed by Milanese company Dordoni Architetti. The Sea Terrace cabins at the ship will feature a beautiful veranda and terrace for the guests to have breakfast or enjoy the view.
The GS-Grand Suites will be the biggest among the cabins categories on board the ship and will feature large balconies, large bathroom, bigger living area sectional double sofabed, and dressing room. The smallest cabin category will be Standard Suites.
The standard amenities offered in the cabins will be lounge/living area, sleeping area, flat HDTV, direct-dial phone, mini-bar/fridge, hairdryer, air-conditioning, 24-hour room service, and complimentary in-cabin continental breakfast.
Dining and entertainment facilities
The vessel will accommodate 16 restaurants and up to 18 themed bars, which will offer traditional Italian food and wines.
The cruise ship will feature multiple areas dedicated to the food experience, including the LAB Restaurant, where guests can try their cooking skills under the guidance of Costa’s chefs, and a restaurant dedicated to families with children.
Colosseo, an entertainment venue located amidships, will be spread over three levels for concerts and shows. It will feature large LED screens on its dome and walls.
The large aft-facing atrium stairway on three decks will be the ideal place for the entertainment of the guests. The top deck will include an open-air balcony with a crystal floor, which will enable the guests to experience the thrill of flying over the sea.
One of the on-board highlights will be Solemio Spa, which will include a beauty salon, sauna, thalassotherapy pool, salt room, snow room, Turkish bath, and treatment rooms. The ship’s wellness complex will also include a fitness centre/gym.
There will be one indoor and three outdoor swimming pools on board the ship. The indoor swimming pool with salt water will include a beach club to recreate the atmosphere of a real bathing establishment.
Sustainable features of Costa Toscana
The LNG-powered Costa Toscana ship has been designed with a circular economy concept. The ship’s LNG propulsion with dual-fuel hybrid engines will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and most of the other particular matter emissions as well as nitrogen oxides and CO₂.
The special desalination plants on board will process seawater directly and meet the ship’s daily water supply requirements.
The sustainable design features of the Costa Toscana will make it one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships in the world when commissioned.
Costa Toscana itineraries
The Costa Toscana cruise ship will embark on its maiden voyage in Brazil in the 2021-22 season. Its inaugural, seven-night cruise will depart from Santos on 26 December 2021 and will cover Salvador and Ilhéus while returning to Santos on 2 January 2022, stretching over New Year’s Eve.
The cruise ship will offer another 15 cruises with the same itinerary by embarking on Santos and Salvador in Brazil from 2 January to 10 April 2022, including the Carnival and Easter departures.
The ship will then embark on its crossing from Santos to Italy on 17 April 2022.
