ABS and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have finished a Joint Development Project (JDP) for the construction of multi-physics simulations to analyse the carbon footprint of vessels in the design phase.
The simulations are expected to permit a detailed evaluation of the effect of different energy-saving options.
It provides a preview of the vessel performance before major investment decisions are finalised.
The simulations are linked to a wide range of inputs from many model types, including computational fluid dynamics, wave resistance and data-validated engine performance models.
Multi-physics models enable the performance impact of design options and operational measures to be assessed.
Examples of technologies that can be assessed during the modelling process are air lubrication systems, energy-saving equipment, voyage speed curves and engine fuel options.

By GlobalDataThe simulation can also showcase the impact of input from different data sources and optimisation tools, which enables a comprehensive trade-off analysis between different configurations of vessels.
ABS senior vice-president Patrick Ryan said: “The modelling and simulation techniques that ABS and HHI are pioneering allow owners, designers and shipyards unprecedented insight into the impact of multiple decarbonisation strategies on a vessel’s performance at the earliest possible stage.
“This approach unlocks benefits in operational efficiency, safety and investment decision making.”
HHI executive vice-president and CTO Jaeeul Kim added: “This joint project will give us more options to review alternative technologies at the early design stage.
“Our vessels fully comply with IMO’s environmental regulations before 2050 with LNG dual-fuel propulsion systems, including various original energy-saving devices, and continuous developments will keep HHI and ABS front-runners in this fast-changing industry.”
Earlier this month, Chevron Shipping Company partnered with ABS for digital fleet management, using ABS Smart notations for its vessels.
