KVH Industries and Kongsberg Digital have deployed their first integrated maritime Internet of Things (IoT) system on Norwegian research vessel Simrad Echo.
The companies have installed a KVH Watch very small aperture terminal (VSAT) antenna for IoT connectivity and the Kognifai Vessel Insight platform on Simrad Echo, an active working vessel owned and operated by Kongsberg.

By GlobalDataSimrad Echo will continue operations during the pilot maritime IoT project. KVH Watch and Kognifai Vessel offer an integrated infrastructure for IoT connectivity and vessel-to-shore data.
Shipowners, ship managers and maritime equipment manufacturers can use the maritime IoT to enhance vessel operations through real-time monitoring and data analysis.
Kongsberg Digital Maritime Digital Solutions senior vice-president Vigleik Takle said: “While Vessel Insight works as an infrastructure for accessing contextualised quality data from a vessel or fleet, KVH is providing an alternative for IoT connectivity that enables the transfer of data from ship to cloud.”
Simrad Echo will use Kognifai Vessel Insight to monitor main and auxiliary systems on the vessel, in addition to ensuring 100% availability.
Kongsberg Mapping Cloud application will drive high-resolution echo sounding data from vessel to shore in real-time, helping shore-based experts to provide analysis to improve vessel operations.
KVH Watch IoT Connectivity as a service will facilitate the data flow from Simrad Echo. KVH Watch is a VSAT solution that powers KVH’s end-to-end maritime connectivity services and high throughput satellite (HTS) network.
It has two modes, which are Watch Flow and Watch Intervention. Watch Flow is an around-the-clock and machine-to-machine data delivery solution that is compatible with major IoT ecosystems such as Kognifai.
Watch Intervention offers on-demand high-speed sessions for face-to-face support, remote equipment access and very large data transfers.
Both companies intend to use Simrad Echo as a platform to develop integrations for remote support and smart bandwidth use, which will be beneficial for both new and existing customers.
KVH maritime services senior director Robert Hopkins said: “During the Simrad Echo pilot, Watch Flow will deliver a complete view of those systems to shore on a Kognifai Vessel Insight dashboard.”
