Finnish cleantech firm Norsepower Oy and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Ship Building Co (SWS) have concluded an energy-efficient dual-fuel VLCC design project.
The design of VLCC has secured approval in principle (AiP) from ABS and the British maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register.

Norsepower Oy said that the project focused on incorporating Rotor Sails in the VLCC design to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
During the joint development project (JDP), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to measure the effectiveness of the implementation of Norsepower’s Rotor Sail solution, including a review of structural strength and visibility calculation.
The results have shown that the new design can cut down 6%-10% fuel consumption and emissions.
Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is completely automated. It can be deployed on new ships or retrofitted on existing ships without any additional expense.

Norsepower’s Rotor Sails have already been deployed on three ships, including Viking Line’s M/S Viking Grace, Bore’s M/S Estraden and Maersk Tanker’s Maersk Pelican.
SWS chief technologist Liu Jianfeng said: “We have focused on developing clean and smart ships that are technically reliable and commercially feasible. We are proud to design advanced ships that will benefit shipowners and lead eco-friendly shipping.”
