Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) has received three new container gantry cranes for its Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) in Hamburg, Germany.
ZPMC manufactured the new cranes. They have arrived at their temporary berth at Athabaskakai on board the Zhen Hua 27 ship and are currently at the Port of Hamburg.
The cranes will provide additional capacity to HHLA to handle ultra-large container vessels with a cargo volume of 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) and more.
They will replace three smaller units at CTB, which have already been dismantled.
HHLA expects to receive another two large container gantry cranes of the same type in the first quarter of 2020.
Once the new handling equipment begins operations, the company will have an additional mega-ship berth at Burchardkai.

By GlobalDataHHLA executive board member Jens Hansen said: “By investing in five new container gantry cranes and creating another mega-ship berth, we are providing our shipping company customers with additional capacities and greater flexibility in handling ultra-large container vessels with a transport capacity of more than 23,000 standard containers.
“The new container gantry cranes will ensure that our customers continue receiving the same high quality of handling in the future.”
The 2,480t container gantry cranes can accommodate ships with a width of 24 containers side by side.
They also feature jibs that are almost 80m-long and can reach across 26 rows of containers.
The cranes can also move two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers with a combined weight of 110t at a time.
Currently, HHLA CTB has more than 30 operational container gantry cranes.
