The Enchantment of the Seas is the second mega-class cruise liner in a series of two ships (the other being Grandeur of the Seas) built by Kvaerner Masa of Finland for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. It is one of the biggest cruise ships in the world.

The hull has an overall length of 279.1m, a breadth of 32.2m and a draught of 7.6m. The vessel’s gross tonnage is 74,000t. It has a maximum speed of 23.5 knots. Enchantment of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas are the first cruise ships to feature a Dynamic Positioning System.
FACILITIES
The Enchantment of the Seas carries 2,440 passengers. The passengers’ accommodation is found on the 7th and 8th decks as well as on decks 2, 3 and 4. There are altogether 975 passenger cabins of which 22% are suites with verandahs and 59% are facing the sea. There are 437 crew cabins and a maximum crew capacity of 760.
Large green glass walls and windows cover large areas of the ship. These window walls provide spectacular views from the seven deck high central atrium and main dining room. The Sun Deck is also surrounded by green glass walls. The main lounge has been separated and moved forward of the funnel, significantly improving layout.
The main entrance on board is on Deck 4 to the Centrum, where the Terrace and Bar is also found. Further aft is the lower level of the two-deck high dining room. The dining room seats 1,180 guests and is equipped with a two-deck high waterfall and a stage for a small orchestra.
On the 5th deck is the outside Promenade deck, the upper level of the main restaurant, the Casino and in the forward part, the two-deck high Theater show lounge, seating 840 guests.
On Deck 6 are the secondary lounge and night club seating 470 guests, the midship lounge and a separate conference area, the Bar, Photo Gallery, Boutiques of the Centrum shopping area and the upper level of the Orpheum Theater.
Decks 7 and 8 include the ship’s library, card room and Study. The wheelhouse is on the eighth deck and the officers’ cabins on the deck below.
Deck 9 is the ship’s Sun Deck with swimming pools and whirlpools. Aft is the two-deck high Fitness Centre, solarium, swimming pool area. Further forward are two outside cafeterias and the large inside cafe seating 435 guests.
The open Sun Walk surrounds the deck, and is equipped with a jogging track. Aft is the discotheque, the Video Arcade video game room and the children’s playroom
The two-level Lounge is on Deck 11 which seats 320 guests and includes the raised mezzanine.
REFITTING
The 2005 refitting included a 73ft midsection which added 151 staterooms to the original 975 rooms. Suspension bridges span the new pool deck, which been expanded by around 15% to include two pools, four whirlpools and an interactive splash deck. There is an outdoor bar and bandstand area which is protected from the weather by 12ft-high glass panes. The splash deck features 64 water jets, 40 of which are connected to an interactive touch-pad system allowing children to create fountain effects and direct spray with a fibre-optic light show. There are also four bungee trampolines.
Amongst the public rooms are the “Boleros” lounge, a larger art gallery and the Lattetudes coffee shop. There are also changes to the spa and fitness area.
PROPULSION
Enchantment of the Seas is equipped with diesel-electric AC-AC power plant machinery with electric propulsion motors. The main engines are four MAN B&W diesel engines (type 12V48/60). The power of each engine is 12,600kW. The main electric drives are supplied by Cegelec. There are four 15,300kVA alternators feeding the 6.6kV main bus bars.
The two propeller motors are synchronous AC electric motors, each with a power of 17MW, 0-155rpm, with double stator winding. The motors are controlled by frequency converters of synchroconverter type with a common control unit. The maximum speed is 23.5 knots and the service speed is 22 knots.
The two propellers are highly skewed fixed pitch propellers supplied by KaMeWa of Sweden. The two spade rudders, supplied by Willi Becker, are of flap type. Two 1,750kW bow thrusters and one 1,750kW stern thrusters with CP propellers (Brunvoll) are connected to the electric motors.
