Finland-based marine technology company Wärtsilä has launched a product aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of dredging operations.
Called Wärtsilä HY for Dredger, the product was showcased at a Future Dredger Day event held at the company’s Hybrid Centre in Trieste, Italy.
Wärtsilä Marine sales and business intelligence director Giulio Tirelli said: “Real operational data from the field was analysed so as to understand exactly the challenges to be overcome, and the product was engineered accordingly.
“Through working closely with our customers, we have been able to further develop the HY technology and customise a new integrated product for the dredging market.”
Based on Wärtsilä’s HY hybrid propulsion technology, the new system features a mixture of different power sources, including the engines and energy storage systems, the power distribution equipment, and the energy management system (EMS).
Wärtsilä said that the EMS ensures immediate load taking and dynamic power demand. It can also adjust the system intelligently to optimise performance throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.

By GlobalDataAs a result of the complete integration of the various systems, Wärtsilä HY for Dredger facilitates smooth and continuous operations in all conditions and ensures engines always run at optimal load, the company said.
The system substantially reduces fuels consumptions and cuts stress on mechanical components, which slashes maintenance costs while enhancing turbocharger life.
Wärtsilä Marine offshore and special vessels director Henrik Wilhelms said: “With this, we can have a lower environmental impact, better fuel efficiency, and reduced maintenance because of fewer running hours.
“This will deliver the most advanced energy solution currently available to the dredging industry, while maintaining a payback time as short as two years.”
The launch of Wärtsilä HY for Dredger forms part of Wärtsilä’s smart marine ecosystem vision, aimed at achieving improved efficiency, higher safety, and better environmental performance.
