TMC Compressors of the Seas (TMC) has secured a contract to supply Smart Air compressors for two new 21,000cbm ethylene carriers.
TMC will provide the compressors to South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which is involved in the construction of the vessels.
Once completed, the carriers will be operated by Norwegian LPG, and petrochemical shipping company Solvang (Solvang).
The vessels will be the world’s first heavy fuel oil (HFO) powered TIR III compliant ethylene carriers.
Both the vessels will be semi-refrigerated / ethylene carriers and will feature exhaust gas cleaning for HFO operations to ensure cost-effective and environmentally friendly operations.
The waste to be generated from the vessels’ exhaust gas cleaning systems will be delivered ashore.

By GlobalDataHFO is capable of maximising the cruising range and/or reducing the overall carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint from the cargo transported.
The new carriers will also be developed to reduce their fuel consumption by around 30%.
The exhaust cleaning systems are also expected to reduce the vessels’ nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission by more than 80%, release a negligible amount of sulphur oxides (Sox), and reduce the emission of soot by about 80-90%.
TMC sales and business development director Hans Petter Tanum said: “Our Smart Air compressors offer 50% energy saving compared to conventional compressors, with subsequent reduction in harmful emissions to air.
“They are obviously an excellent fit for the environmentally friendly profile of these Solvang ethylene carriers.”
In a separate development, TMC has been awarded a contract to provide two nitrogen (N2) feed air compressors for the carriers’ on-board N2 systems.
