Wärtsilä has completed all the necessary tests of its Aquarius UV ballast water management system (BWMS) required for United States Coast Guard (USCG) type approval compliance.
The tests have helped Wärtsilä to finalise the documentation for full USCG type approval of the BWMS.
Wärtsilä is expected to submit the documentation to USCG once it receives final input from the USCG-approved independent laboratory DNV-GL.
Aquarius UV previously received type approval from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2011.
It has also received USCG’s alternate management system (AMS) acceptance, which is designed to provide regulatory compliance for the ships operating in the US waters for an interim period of up to five years from the ships specific compliance date, or until the grating of full USCG type approval.
Results from both the IMO and USCG AMS acceptance protocols have demonstrated that Aquarius UV can enable ship owners and operators to meet the global Ballast Water Management Convention regulations that came into effect in September with an aim to control the transfer of potentially invasive species via the ship’s ballast water.

By GlobalDataWärtsilä Marine Solutions Ballast Water Management Systems sales director Craig Patrick said: “The reliability, robustness, and efficiency of our full BWMS portfolio is clearly endorsed with both the UV and EC technologies having passed the demanding USCG testing protocol.
“This puts Wärtsilä in a unique position in helping marine operators to meet international regulatory requirements.”
Aquarius UV BWMS is a flexible system developed to use a two-stage approach involving filtration and medium pressure ultra-violet (UV) disinfection technology. It also fully complies with the IMO’s D-2 discharge standards.
