Wärtsilä has secured a €170m contract to provide its hybrid exhaust scrubber systems and retrofit services for an undisclosed European container shipping company.

As part of the order, Wärtsilä will supply its 50MW, 60MW and 70MW hybrid scrubber systems that will be retrofitted to the container vessels.

Wärtsilä’s scrubber solutions are designed to operate in both open and closed-loop configurations.

In open-loop operation, the scrubber systems use seawater and in closed-loop mode also us an additional reagent to remove sulphur oxides (SOx) from the exhaust, helping the vessels reduce emissions in coastal and sea areas.

Using the systems, the container ships will be able to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (Marpol) regulation’s emission level, which is expected to become effective on 1 January 2020.

Under the regulations, the global limit for sulphur in fuel oil used onboard ships will be reduced from the current 3.50% mass by mass (m/m) to 0.50% m/m on and after 1 January 2020.

In addition, Wärtsilä will provide engineering and site advisory services for the vessels as part of the latest order.

Last month, Wärtsilä signed an agreement to maintain the exhaust gas cleaning systems installed in three vessels managed by Wilhelmsen Ship Management.

The five-year agreement aims to ensure that the vessels will be fully compliant with IMO’s MARPOL regulations.
