The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has announced the opening of the Latin America Maritime Technology Cooperation Center (MTCC-Latin America) in Panama’s Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá (UMIP).

The centre, which is run by IMO, is one among five such centres created as part of the GMN project, which is funded by the European Union (EU).

Other MTCCs are situated in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific regions, while they serve as regional focal points for various activities.

The centres are used to address various issues, including improving compliance with existing and future international energy-efficiency regulations, as well as supporting the uptake of low-carbon technologies and operations in maritime transport.

They also work towards establishing voluntary pilot data-collection and reporting systems to provide feedback to the global regulatory process.

“The global network of MTCCs will promote understanding and knowledge of technologies and operations to improve energy efficiency.”

The works are expected to eventually support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The MTCC-Latin America will use the office space, equipment, information technology (IT) infrastructure and staff of UMIP, which is situated close to the Port of the city of Panama.

As part of its association with the centre, UMIP will be involved in all areas related to the maritime sector such as shipping, maritime infrastructure and services, as well as coastal, marine, and environmental protection.
