Port of Rotterdam commissions new hybrid vessel
The Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands commissioned the new hybrid patrol vessel RPA 8 that was built by Kooiman Group in Zwijndrecht.
The new 25m-long boat can run on both diesel and diesel-electric power and replaces the previous RPA 3, which reached the end of its technical and economic service-life.

Maersk and IBM announce JV to digitise supply chains
Danish container shipping firm A.P. Moller – Maersk is set to partner with IBM to create a new joint venture (JV) that aims to enhance global trade and digitise supply chains using blockchain technology.
The proposed JV seeks to develop a global trade digitisation platform for the entire shipping industry network based on open standards.
The JV is slated to be headquartered in New York State, US, and also intends to provide greater transparency, as well as simplify the transfer of goods across borders and trading zones.

Transport Canada brought in a new regulation to control pollution from shipping operations in the Arctic region, which connects the country with other nations via waterways and serves as an important lifeline for its northern communities.
The new ‘Arctic Shipping Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations’ includes the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code), which aims to addresses issues faced by certain vessels operating in the Arctic and Antarctic.
The new regulation also features multiple safety and pollution prevention measures, including initiatives related to vessel design and equipment, vessel operations and crew training.
APM to build new $100m terminal in Georgia, US
APM Terminals’ Poti unit signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Poti New Terminals Consortium to construct a new bulk cargo terminal in Georgia, US, with an investment of roughly $100m.
The proposed terminal will be designed to process 1.5 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo a year.
It will be built on land owned by APM Terminals Poti and is expected to create new trade opportunities for customers within the Georgian transit corridor.
FSG secures €165.2m ferry building contract from ICG
German company Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesselschaft & Co.KG (FSG) won a €165.2m deal from Irish Continental Group (ICG) to build a new cruise ferry.
The vessel will be designed to accommodate 1,800 passengers and crew, and will feature capacity for 5,610 freight lane metres to carry 330 freight units per voyage.
The ferry is expected to be delivered before mid-2020 and will be operated by ICG division Irish Ferries on the Dublin-Holyhead route.
New IMB report finds global maritime piracy falls to 22-year low
A new report from the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) International Maritime Bureau (IMB) revealed that 2017 saw the lowest number of recorded maritime piracy and armed robbery incidents worldwide since 1995.
A total of 180 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were reported last year, compared to 188 incidents in 1995.
The new IMB report notes that pirates boarded 136 vessels last year, while there were 22 attempted attacks, 16 vessels fired upon and six vessels hijacked during the same period.
Teekay and Wärtsilä develop new shuttle tanker concept
Global shuttle tanker services provider Teekay and Finnish technology developer Wärtsilä developed a new shuttle tanker concept, which is intended to offer a new level of economic and ecological capabilities.
It is expected to reduce yearly carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions equivalents by more than 40% compared to traditional shuttle tankers.
The concept’s dual-fuel engines are intended to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel and are designed to run on a combination of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds (VOC) gas that evaporates from oil cargo tanks during loading.
Essar Ports completes $441m investment in Salaya and Vizag terminals
Indian ports developer Essar Ports (EPL) concluded an investment of more than Rs28bn ($441m) in its Salaya and Vizag terminals, situated in the states of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh respectively.
The investment is expected to help increase EPL’s revenues by around 30% in the 2018-2019 fiscal year via the support of third-party cargo growth at the sites.
EPL CEO Rajiv Agarwal said: “The two fully integrated and automated facilities at Salaya and Vizag further the goal of port-led development set by the Government of India and our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
New $2.15bn automated terminal opened in China’s Yangshan Port
A new fully automated container terminal was opened at Yangshan Port in Shanghai, China.
The terminal was built with an investment of $2.15bn and represents the fourth phase of Shanghai Port’s Yangshan Port project.
It is capable of handling a maximum of 6.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo.
Valmet to revamp Aranda marine research vessel’s system
Global technology provider Valmet secured a contract from Finnish company Telesilta to upgrade the control and machinery monitoring system on-board the Aranda marine research vessel.
The upgrade will be carried out in order to meet existing requirements as part of a wider renovation project being conducted on the Aranda vessel.
Valmet is set to provide its DNA control and machinery monitoring system under the arrangement, as well as training and commissioning services.
