COSCOS has taken delivery of a new containership that is set to be the first to receive Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive note ‘Cyber AL3 secure perform’.

The note will be granted for the ship’s on-board energy management system and offers an accessibility level (AL) to allow autonomous / remote access to the system.

COSCOS’ new MV COSCO Shipping Aries vessel complies with the latest version of LR’s Cyber-enabled ships ShipRight procedure, which was issued last month.

“We are very fortunate to have the great support from LR and finally, successfully, obtain the first AL3-level descriptive note for ultra-large container ship in the world.”

The ultra-large container ship has a capacity of 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and was built by Nantong COSCOS KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) at a Chinese shipyard owned by COSCO Shipping Container Lines.

Cyber-enabled systems are noted to be capable of undertaking simple remote monitoring with a crew on-board, or fully autonomous operation without a crew on-board.

COSCO Shipping Container Line Safety and Technology Department general manager Shi Yongxin said: “We have always attached great importance to cyber-enabled fleet in order to enhance fleet management, reduce energy consumption and control emission.

“In the field of cyber-enabled ship, LR has great research findings and well-established requirement.

“During the construction of the MV COSCO Shipping Aries, we are very fortunate to have the great support from LR and finally, successfully, obtain the first AL3-level descriptive note for ultra-large container ship in the world.

“This ensures our goal is successfully achieved.”

COSCOS expects to apply LR’s CES descriptive notes to some of its other vessels in the future.
