Belgium-based Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering (DEME) has secured multiple dredging contracts worth €150m from ports in Egypt, Turkey and Panama.

Under the contract with Suez Canal Authority (SCA), DEME will dredge a side channel of 9.5km-long, 250m-wide and 18.5m-deep providing access to the eastern part of Port Said in Egypt.

The project will be carried out by the consortium Dredging International (DEME Group) and US-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock company.

The new eastern side canal is expected to reduce clashes between the maritime convoys of the nearby Suez Canal and the ships sailing to and from Port Said.

The project is expected to complete in the near future.

The contract with Autoridad Canal de Panama (ACP) will see DEME carrying out further widening and deepening of the pacific entrance to the Panama Canal.

Additionally, the existing entrance southbound of the Americas Bridge will be broadened over a distance of 7km by 37m on both sides, bringing to a total width of 300m.

DEME has also been contracted for facilitating access to Mersin International Port (MIP) which is a joint venture between the Port of Singapore Authority and the Turkish infrastructure investment holding Akfen.

The project will involve the widening and deepening of the approach channel, the turning circle as well as the basin and berth approach channel.
