Wartsila has been awarded a contract to provide propulsion solutions to a new polar logistics vessel being built for Terre Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF) and the French Polar Institute (IPEV).
Under the terms of the deal, the company will provide four in-line Wartsila 20 main engines, two stainless steel CPP propellers and shaft lines, two reduction gears, four NOR emissions after treatment systems, and one tunnel thrusters, all in line with the Bureau Veritas (BV) icebreaker 5 ice class rules.

Additionally, Wartsila will provide its NOx Reducer (NOR) systems to the new vessel that will facilitate compliance with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Tier III emission regulations.
Deliveries under the order are expected to take place in mid-2016.
The new vessel will be built by Chantiers Piriou, Concarneau based on a concept design recommended by France’s Marine Assistance.

The ship will be operated by the French Navy upon its delivery scheduled in the first half of 2017.
The 72m-long polar logistics and patrol icebreaker vessel will have the capacity to accommodate 60 persons besides a cargo capacity of 1200 metric tons and feature a helideck that will hold two helicopters.
On delivery, the new polar vessel will sail on its first supply mission to the Dumont d’Urville station, Antarctica in the end of 2018.
Recently, Wartsila was contracted by Vyborg Shipyard to supply three eight-cylinder Wartsila 31 engines to power Aker ARC 124 icebreaker being built for Russia’s Atomflot.
