Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has unveiled plans to begin the next phase of expansion of Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT) and addition of new equipment in 2016 and 2017, in a bid to cater to the growing demand.
The expansion plan will include adding three additional ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes and ten automated rail mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes over the next two years to augment the terminal capacity and pave the way for growing needs in the future.
It is estimated that following the expansion, the annual throughput at Abu Dhabi’s container port will increase to 2.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
The facility is expected to procure an annual throughput capacity of 5 million TEU by virtue of its future expansion capabilities.
KPCT, Abu Dhabi Port’s flagship, deepwater port and main container port, is currently on 78% of its handling capacity.
It is set to increase its functional readiness through an upliftment in its infrastructure, in a bid to address the demand of the local and regional industry.
