NYK Blue Jay

Japan-based NYK Line has commissioned the containership NYK Blue Jay upon its delivery at the Kure shipyard of Japan Marine United (JMU).

In April 2014, NYK Line had placed an order with JMU to build eight 14,000TEU boxships at their Kure Shipyard.

With the delivery of NYK Blue Jay now complete, the rest are expected to be delivered and chartered in January 2018.

The 14000TEU containership has a length of 364m, width of 51m and deadweight tonnage of 139,335t.

The vessel is fitted with a hull that facilitates an improved cargo-loading efficiency, which is achieved by reducing the space occupied by the engine.

The containership is driven by engines, the main engine is fitted with world’s first system featuring two power ranges (high and low) that fortifies the ship to engage in operations requiring faster momentum.

The design of the engine is said to promote fuel efficiency by controlling the fuel-consumption rate when slow-streaming, resulting in a reduction of both carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption.

The innovations incorporated into the vessel is said to pave the way for operational energy savings in the shipping industry as well as leading to a simultaneous cost-efficiency when compared to larger containers with a capacity to ferry 20,000TEUs.

The containership NYK Blue Jay is scheduled to be commissioned to service between Asia and Europe.

Last year, NYK Line along with Japanese firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) had partnered through their joint-venture (JV) companies with Chubu Electric Power to order two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers each.

The ships were said to ferry LNG procured by Chubu from the Freeport project.
