Inmarsat has launched Fleet Xpress, which is a high-speed broadband solution for maritime as well as for the offshore operators propagated from a single communications provider.

The ship owners and operators are said to benefit from Fleet Xpress, which improves their business intelligence, operational efficacy and vessel performance, coupled with an array of crew welfare benefits.

The new solution will also enable the third party application providers to broaden their existing services to maritime customers, including the development of new applications to boost operational efficiency, ranging from real-time monitoring, remote diagnostics and telemedicine, to security, and crew service management tools.

“Through Fleet Xpress, ship owners and operators can experience unparalleled levels of performance and simplicity.”

Inmarsat maritime president Ronald Spithout said: "Through Fleet Xpress, ship owners and operators can experience unparalleled levels of performance and simplicity.

"It will provide the guaranteed high-speed connectivity that is essential to support the safest and most efficient vessel operations, anywhere in the world.

"While, in parallel, it will match the personal connectivity needs of even the most demanding modern seafarer, delivering services previously available only on shore."

Fleet Xpress is based on Inmarsat’s new Global Xpress (GX) satellite constellation and combines the high data speeds of Ka-band with the FleetBroadband L-band service for unlimited backup.

Its structure is fully integrated, which facilitates an automatic switch between Ka-band and L-band to ensure an undisrupted connection with a committed information rate.

Fleet Xpress hardware is incorporated with a network service device (NSD) to control bandwidth and traffic flow through Inmarsat-tested antennae and type-approved user terminals, provided by hardware partners Intellian, JRC and Cobham SATCOM.

The Inmarsat Gateway serves as the user interface for Fleet Xpress and offers service configuration and management functionalities.

It issues access rights for different user groups and manages and monitors the service.

The vessels to be incorporated with Fleet Express will require a 1m or 60cm Global Xpress antenna and terminal, and a FleetBroadband terminal, pre-introduced into the network to facilitate quick and easy plug and play deployment.
