Wartsila engine

Winterthur Gas and Diesel (WinGD) along with Doosan Engine have exhibited Wartsila’s first low-speed low-pressure six-cylinder X62DF (W6X62DF) engine for a commercial application.

During the demonstration at Doosan’s works in Changwon, Korea, the engine operated under a number of load and fuelling conditions and has been assessed on its engine control features, tuning, economy and emissions.

The engine’s design fuel consumption was validated with a Tier III NOx emissions compliance in gas mode, without any additional exhaust treatment, coupled with its ability to be functionally stable in a wide operating window.

“WinGD has announced the availability of the fuel-sharing feature in the X-DF engines later this year.”

It features a classification society type approval testing (TAT) approved WinGD’s X-DF technology and RT-flex50DF low-pressure gas admission.

The X-DF technology is said to facilitate a reduced capital expenditure (CAPEX), owing to its convenient and low-cost liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel gas handling system, required for gas admission at pressure below 16 bar.

On the other hand, the technology is expected to augment the operating expenditure (OPEX), particularly for LNG carriers since it requires no high-pressure gas compression system external to the engine to enable the usage of natural boil-off gas (nbog).

The technology also allows the engine to stably operate on gas across the entire load range from 5% to 100% with no additional requirement of increasing liquid fuel injection under any situation where sufficient gaseous fuel is available.

WinGD has announced the availability of the fuel-sharing feature in the X-DF engines later this year, which will enable the vessel operators with an increased flexibility to utilise liquid and gaseous fuel simultenously.

W6X62DF engine is the first sold X-DF engine to be incorporated into the new generation very large LNG carriers.

Doosan is currently testing the engine prior to its delivery and is one of a pair that will power the first of two 180,000 coalbed methane cbm LNG carriers being built by Samsung Heavy Industries for SK Shipping and Marubeni.
