Norway-based classification society DNV GL has awarded an approval in principle (AiP) for Vard Engineering Brevik’s new 6,500m³ liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel design concept.
Before granting the AiP, the vessel was assessed for compliance with the DNV GL gas bunker rules, relevant gas carrier rules and IGC Code's 2016 edition.
The new bunker vessel will receive 1A tanker for liquefied gas bunker class notation.
DNV GL gas carriers business director Petter Tutturen said: “With the continuing rise in interest in LNG as a ship fuel, both from an environmental and economic perspective, it is essential that we continue to develop the infrastructure which will allow this technology to thrive.”
The society noted that AiP, which has been performed at an early stage of a project, is an independent assessment of a concept within an agreed framework. It verifies the feasibility of the design and confirms the non-existence of major obstacles that prevent the concept from being executed.
Last year, DNV GL granted approval for Vard’s general approval of ship application (GASA) and Brevik Technology's new IMO Type-B LNG cargo containment system.
