HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has been granted approval in principle (AIP) by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a tank design aimed at enhancing large-scale hydrogen transport and storage.
The vacuum insulation system is engineered to reduce the time needed for vacuum creation in large tanks, a key requirement for hydrogen transportation.
The technology is capable of sustaining vacuum at a temperature of -253℃, thereby ensuring the safe transport of liquid hydrogen without losses, according to HD KSOE.
ABS stated that it has conducted thorough design reviews to ensure the system meets class and statutory requirements.
ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer Patrick Ryan said: “Hydrogen is a key enabler for decarbonisation, playing critical roles as fuel, feedstock, energy storage and load balancing.
“As demand grows, shipping will need advanced systems to support large-scale liquid hydrogen storage and transportation. This is an exciting milestone for HD KSOE, and ABS is proud to support such innovative technologies.”

By GlobalDataThe technology’s validation test saw the participation of energy and shipping companies, including Woodside Energy, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), and Hyundai Glovis.
These companies are now collaborating with HD KSOE on the joint development of an 80,000m³ liquid hydrogen carrier.
HD KSOE vice president Dr Byeongyong Yoo said: “HD KSOE has been dedicated to providing technological solutions for large-scale energy shipping such as LNG, LPG, Ammonia, CO2, and now hydrogen.
“This hydrogen vacuum system solution and large-scale validation test are part of these efforts. We will continue collaborating with leading global companies to drive the energy transition and achieve net-zero goals.”
In 2023, HD KSOE signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ABS to develop automation solutions for unmanned ships capable of navigation and safety diagnostics without human assistance.
