The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and maritime solutions provider MISC have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to advance digital transformation in the maritime industry.

The agreement was signed by MPA’s assistant chief executive for operations and operations technology David Foo and MISC Marine vice president Mohd Denny Mohd Isa.

Under the three-year agreement, MPA and MISC will concentrate on integrating sustainable digital technologies into marine operations. They aim to improve processes through data-sharing initiatives and cybersecurity innovations.

The initiatives will include technology trials and data exchanges for tankers using the Just-in-time Planning and Coordination platform under digitalPort@SGTM.

The partnership will also leverage cloud services to support the use of electronic clearances and certificates in the Port of Singapore (PSA) and on Singapore-registered ships. There are plans to conduct cyber solution trials with the Maritime Cyber Assurance and Operations Centre.

MPA chief executive Teo Eng Dih said: “MISC, with its expertise in ship management and sustainable shipping practices, is a good partner for MPA to develop solutions to help digitalise and optimise shipping operations.

Furthermore, the two entities will work with Singapore’s research ecosystem to explore AI, digital twins, and semi-autonomous vessel operations.

The initiative also prioritises talent development, identifying emerging skill sets necessary for onshore ship management. It aims to upskill seafarers to operate alternative-fuelled vessels and ensure a future-ready maritime workforce.

Training will be conducted under the Maritime Energy Training Facility.

In May this year, Singaporean transport authorities and the PSA responding to port congestion reports, announced plans to build three new berths at Tuas Port.
