BAR Technologies, a shipping technology developer, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mitsubishi and Nihon Shipyard to promote wind-assisted propulsion in Japan.

The trio aims to accelerate the adoption of wind propulsion systems in Japanese vessel manufacturing, targeting both domestic and international markets.

The companies will combine their expertise to create new low-emission ships and explore integrating BAR Technologies’ WindWings into various vessel designs.

The collaboration follows the successful installation of WindWings on Mitsubishi’s Pyxis Ocean bulk carrier vessel.

WindWings are patented three-element rigid wings inspired by aerospace design. The high-lift wings are constructed from durable marine steel and advanced industrial composite materials.

They have a 37.5m aerodynamic span, a total width of 20m, a surface area of 750m² and typically extend 45m above the deck.

WindWings applies established aeronautical principles, functioning in the same way as aeroplane wings to optimise thrust and efficiency automatically through fully adjustable camber and angle-of-attack positioning.

They generate 2.5 times the thrust of a single-element wing and feature fully adjustable camber and orientation, optimising performance based on the apparent wind.

BAR Technologies CEO John Cooper said: “With a rapidly growing pipeline of WindWings orders for vessels in other major shipping markets, the next logical stage in our journey was to seek a partnership with Mitsubishi and Nihon Shipyard to enable customers in Japan to ensure their fleets will be compliant with global shipping emissions regulations now and into the future.”

Mitsubishi has agreed to represent WindWings in Japan, offering a comprehensive wind propulsion solution to Japanese vessel owners.

Mitsubishi Ship and Infrastructure Department general manager Naoki Arima said: “Having an existing, long and trustworthy relationship with BAR Technologies and its WindWings technology, we felt the next step in the partnership was to further integrate the offer enabling us to provide more value to the industry, especially for Japanese shipping companies who are exploring ways to maintain a sustainable business.”
