The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) in the US has unveiled a $100m investment plan for Flynn Cruiseport Boston.

The investment includes $60m for installing shore power – an advancement in sustainable maritime practices at the Port of Boston.

Massport CEO Rich Davey announced the plans to bring ship-to-shore power to Flynn Cruiseport’s two main berths, a move that aligns with 80% of the ships serving Boston.

Davey said: “Our investment in shore power will dramatically reduce emissions, improve air quality, and reinforce Boston’s position as a leader in sustainable maritime practices.

“We’re also committed to continuously enhancing our facilities to accommodate the growing demand for cruising, the increase in larger ships like the Breakaway, and to ensure a seamless experience for both passengers and ships.”

The use of shore power allows docked ships to rely on landside electricity, reducing emissions. The project’s completion is targeted for 2029, with expected reductions in NOx by 93%, SO₂ by 85%, PM2.5 by 86% and CO₂ by 65%.

State Senator Nick Collins said: “The maritime industry has been a cornerstone of our local economy, driving growth and creating countless jobs in Boston and throughout the Commonwealth.

“The addition of ship-to-shore power at Flynn Cruiseport will reduce emissions for the people of South Boston and our longshoremen while enhancing sustainability and competitiveness.”

Massport is also upgrading the Flynn Cruiseport terminal to accommodate larger vessels. The terminal will see pier enhancements, an additional passenger boarding bridge and expanded facilities to streamline passenger flow.

The Norwegian Breakaway is expected to become Flynn Cruiseport Boston’s largest homeport vessel in 2026.

In 2024, Flynn Cruiseport witnessed a 29% increase in passenger numbers, reaching 480,000, and welcomed 167 cruise ships – 18 more than in 2023.

The 2024 cruise season, which ran from March to early November, included 13 maiden voyages and supported diverse itineraries, with the Canada/New England route accounting for 64% of passengers.
