French shipping giant CMA CGM Group has formed a joint venture with Moroccan port operator Marsa Maroc to equip and operate a significant section of the Nador West Med container terminal in Morocco.
This collaboration will see both companies managing 50% the terminal’s 750-metre quay and 35 hectares of yard space for 25 years.
CMA CGM and Marsa Maroc will hold 49% and 51% stakes in the joint venture, respectively.
This partnership aims to bolster Morocco’s position as a key logistics hub, with CMA CGM enhancing its presence in the region.
The group is already a significant player in Morocco, operating in Eurogate Tangiers and Casablanca’s SOMAPORT container terminals.
The joint venture plans to invest $280m with the objective of achieving an annual throughput of 1.2 million TEUs at the terminal.

Positioned in the Gibraltar zone, the Nador West Med port is set to complement CMA CGM’s existing Mediterranean terminals.
The location in the Bay of Betoya, near the Oued Kert estuary, provides strategic advantages for trans-Mediterranean trade.
Moreover, leveraging Morocco’s burgeoning green hydrogen sector, the Nador West Med terminal is poised to become a key bunkering hub for synthetic maritime fuels, aligning with CMA CGM’s fleet of dual-fuel gas and methanol vessels.
CMA CGM Group chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé said: “Morocco is positioning itself as a strategic logistics and port hub with strong growth potential. The partnership we are entering into with Marsa Maroc marks a key step for the CMA CGM Group, strengthening our presence through the Nador West Med container terminal.
“Our ambition is to support the country’s development, particularly in the forward-looking sectors of logistics and alternative energies.”
