By GlobalDataIt features multi-fuel engines and a 12 MWh battery-hybrid package, allowing for battery-only operation in port and during docking manoeuvres without diesel engine use.
This solution is said to reduce CO2 emissions and is complemented by an 8MW shore connection for rapid battery charging, enabling a fossil fuel-free port stay.
Its engines can run on various fuels, including marine diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), biodiesel, and biogas, with a scalable power take in (PTI)/ power-take-off generator (PTO)system for future full battery operation or fuel combination use.
Stena RoRo CEO Per Westling said: “Within the framework of the E-Flexer concept, there has been continuous technical development, and we can offer our customers very flexible and future-proof propulsion systems that by a margin meet both present and future environmental requirements.
“The large battery hybrid system we installed on the Saint-Malo means that the ship can operate optimally, in steps with regulatory developments, or in accordance with the operator’s own policies.”
The vessel’s interior is crafted by Figura Arkitekter. The E-Flexer series, features an optimised hull, propellers, and rudders for sustainability and efficiency.
Brittany Ferries will charter Saint-Malo for ten years, with a purchase option after four.
This vessel is the fourth of five E-Flexer ships ordered by Brittany Ferries.
The five E-Flexer ships ordered by the company are part of a fleet modernisation effort, with the first three vessels delivered between 2020 and 2023, and the final vessel expected in early January 2025.
In July this year, Stena RoRo ordered two new methanol-ready E-Flexer vessels for a long-term charter with the Greek Attica Group.
